Janel owns and operates Axon Music Therapy  which provides music therapy services and music lessons to private clients and facilities in Cambridge, Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph and surrounding areas. Janel graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU) in 2016 with a Bachelors of Music Therapy. She received Honours with Distinction and also attained a Minor in Psychology. Janel is a Board-Certified Music Therapist with the Canadian Association of Music Therapy (CAMT).

While at WLU, Janel played trombone, piano and guitar. She completed her 1000 hour internship at Sunnyside Senior Services in Kitchener, working on long-term care and rehabilitation teams. In May 2016, Janel completed the Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) training in Toronto and now focuses on evidence-based, goal-oriented work in her sessions. She often incorporates musical and non-musical activities into sessions to achieve motor, speech and cognitive goals. Janel's approach is often educational and is influenced by developmental and neurological models of music therapy. In June 2019, Janel completed her Neurologic Music Therapy Fellowship, which is the highest level of Neurologic Music Therapy training. Janel has also completed the Level 1 Supervisor Training through the CAMT.

Janel has developed many music therapy programs with various community organizations such as Sunblast Cambridge, Beechwood Brainery, Autism Ontario and Community Living Cambridge. Janel has also provided numerous presentations and workshops about music therapy to colleagues and the public, focusing on operating a small business and Neurologic Music Therapy.

Currently, Janel also teaches private piano lessons specializing in teaching beginners and adapted music lessons. Janel incorporates classical and popular music into her lessons and often uses humour, composing, improvising and performing to inspire her students. In her spare time Janel enjoys hiking, spending time with her family and attending hot yoga classes.
